Zuni Veterans Memorial Survey – A Testament to SAM's Adaptability and Respect for Client Needs
The Zuni Reservation, located in northern New Mexico near the Arizona border, is the homeland of the Zuni tribe, also known as the Pueblo of Zuni. In this project, SAM was tasked with providing an as-built survey of the tribe’s newly completed Veterans Memorial. This survey not only showcases SAM’s technical expertise but also underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining strong client relationships, offering both cutting-edge and traditional surveying solutions with the same level of care and precision.
The Zuni Reservation Veterans Memorial holds deep meaning, honoring the service and sacrifices of their veterans. As a location for reflection and remembrance, the memorial integrates significant cultural elements, including native designs in the concrete and sidewalks. The importance of capturing these features accurately was paramount to the Zuni, as the site reflects their history, pride, and honor. This project was not simply about technical data but about ensuring that the essence of the memorial was properly recorded for future generations.
David Acosta, New Mexico Operations Manager, began his relationship with the Pueblo of Zuni people nearly ten years ago while completing a construction staking project for a new elementary school situated directly across from the Veterans Memorial. During that project, the team was able to meet more tribal members, turning into the beginning of what has evolved into a long-term partnership with members of the Zuni. The trust built over these years was a critical factor in the success of the Veterans Memorial Survey. By developing strong relationships, SAM was able to ensure clear communication, which is vital for any project, especially one as culturally significant as a memorial. The ongoing collaboration reflects SAM’s ability to provide both technical expertise and a client-centered approach that leads to successful project outcomes. David Acosta says, “We were fortunate that they continued to call us, and that they allowed us to be a part of this specific significant project.”
Initially, the project plan involved the use of drone technology to capture aerial views of the memorial. However, logistical challenges with obtaining the necessary permissions to fly the drone meant that the team had to reconsider their approach. Rather than delay the project, SAM adapted quickly by implementing alternative surveying techniques. Combining GPS work with terrestrial LiDAR scanning, SAM was able to produce a precise and detailed as-built survey of the memorial. SAM used Trimble R12 RTK GPS units to gather supplemental shots and for the terrestrial LiDAR scanning employed the Trimble TSC and X7 to capture the detailed scans of the memorial’s key features. The combination of GPS and LiDAR scanning enabled SAM to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data. SAM also demonstrated its ability to quickly adjust and find alternative solutions that ensured the project could continue as planned without compromising quality. The ability to navigate unforeseen challenges is a testament to SAM's adaptability and the team's commitment to delivering results no matter the circumstances.
One of SAM's greatest strengths is its ability to work on highly technical, cutting-edge projects, such as utilizing drones and LiDAR, as well as maintaining excellence during the more straightforward surveying tasks that require attention to detail and consistency. By employing a combination of state-of-the-art technology and hands-on expertise, SAM ensures the highest standards of quality and precision in every project. Whether in complex, high-tech projects or simple land surveys, SAM applies the same dedication and technical prowess.
The Zuni Veterans Memorial Survey is a testament to SAM's versatility. By respecting both the technical and cultural aspects of the project, SAM was able to create a survey that truly honored the memorial and its significance to the Zuni Reservation. The memorial’s design, coupled with the unique challenges of the site, made this project one that required a thoughtful and respectful approach—qualities SAM has consistently demonstrated in its work. SAM was not only delivering a survey but also preserving the integrity and purpose of a meaningful landmark for the Pueblo of Zuni.
Through this project, SAM has shown that it is not only capable of handling complex surveying tasks but also committed to fostering long-term relationships with its clients based on trust, respect, and a shared commitment to community development. SAM’s adaptability and its ability to navigate challenges make it a valuable partner for projects that require both technical precision and cultural awareness.
